We are the immigrant justice team with We the People Action Fund. Our team is organizing in Grand Rapids, Niles, Kalamazoo, Traverse City, St. Joseph, Hartford, Detroit, and Benton Harbor. Together, we’re building a grassroots movement to make this a state that welcomes newcomers and ensures everyone is free to live comfortably and safely here and take care of our loved ones, no exceptions.
In order to do that, we need to restore driver’s licenses for all Michigan’s undocumented immigrants by passing the DRIVE SAFE bills in the Michigan legislature.
Whether first or fifth generation Michiganders, we all want to be able to move around freely, care for our families, and enjoy a little leisure.
But because Michigan lawmakers took away drivers licenses over a decade ago, essential daily tasks for undocumented Michiganders, like driving to work or picking up a gallon of milk from the store have come with fear, lost opportunities and the risk of separation from their families.
It’s time to stand up for each other and demand that everyone have a right to obtain a driver’s license, regardless of how long they’ve been here. Together, we can make this a place where freedom is for everyone.
Immigrants need to go to work, shop for groceries, and get medical care for themselves and their kids, same as anyone else. Join us to restore driver’s licenses to all and learn more about our work.
